The Galactic Clusters Survey
The substellar mass function : young brown dwarfs and planets
The UKIDSS Galactic Clusters Survey aims to measure the substellar
mass function (MF) in a number of Galactic clusters and star formation
associations. We will determine, with good statistics, the form of
this function down to masses between 10 and 40 Jupiter masses
(depending on cluster age/distance) in a variety of Galactic
environments. These observations will yield a survey of the MF and the
evolution of the fundamental initial MF as a function of environment
and age. The required magnitude limits of this survey are J=20.0,
H=19.2, K=18.4 over a total area of ~1600 sq. degs. The total
on-source integration time is ~370 hours.
